Understanding the Endocannabinoid System and Emerald Health Bioceuticals
By Henry Long, Wellness Manager at Harvest MarketPerhaps you’ve heard of the recent popularity of CBD oil. Companies are coming out of the woodwork making numerous claims touting its extraordinary results for any number of maladies and health issues. To be sure, it has become a somewhat confusing “wild west” of products, information, and legal controversy, and where it is all leading is hard to say. In an attempt to clear the air somewhat, we’re going to dive right in to another related topic: Evolution.
Let’s go back in time to when weird little sea creatures were in their early stages of life. Back to that magical moment when tube worms and jelly fish-like animals no bigger than the width of a human hair were first evolving a defined top and bottom, as well as a front and back. At this time, around 600 million years ago, the Bilateria, (those animals with bilateral symmetry), underwent a remarkable evolutionary split: They divide into the protostomes and the deuterostomes. The deuterostomes eventually became all the vertebrates, and the protostomes became all the arthropods (insects, spiders, crabs, shrimp, various types of worms, and other microscopic critters).
It is here, in that soupy formation of all life as we now understand it, that the Endocannabinoid System (ECS: named after the notorious plant the study of which, in the late 1980’s, led to its discovery) was born. Think of the ECS as the Leonard Bernstein to the human being’s biological orchestra. It is a conductor of homeostasis through chemical signals and biological communication throughout the brain and other parts of the body. It is responsible for balancing and regulating our physical, emotional and mental health. It triggers receptors from the sub-cellular level to the whole organism itself. Put in layman’s terms, the ECS keeps your internal systems in a balanced, stable condition that is critical for survival and general well-being.
The ECS, with its “lock and key” receptor sites, is a kind of chain reaction cascading through our neurotransmitters, influencing our immune system, nervous system, digestive system, and all of the body’s cells and organs. It is a biological bridge between body and mind. By understanding this system, we begin to see a beautiful mechanism that might just explain how what you think (states of consciousness) can either promote good health or incur inflammation and disease.
A comparable analogy is how our bodies produce endorphins that are chemically similar to opiates, but are much weaker. Similarly, although our body creates its own endocannabinoids (inside the body), the process is not as strong as phytocannabinoids (from plants). Thus, when we use phytocannabinoids, we’re creating a stronger response to something that our bodies are naturally creating.
So when in comes to supplementation with phytocannabinoids to support the ECS, there are basically 2 choices: CBD oil from cannabis; and non-cannabis derived products. Let’s call them “CBD Alternatives.” Until the legalities (and clinical studies) are absolutely clear regarding the use of CBD oil, it’s the latter we’re focusing on here.
Emerald Health Bioceuticals have developed, in partnership with Dr. Michael Murray, a CBD Alternative to give full-spectrum support of the Endocannabinoid System. It incorporates a proprietary blend of organic Hemp Seed oil, Ginger root, Paeonia (Peony) Root, Clove Flower Bud Oil, Zanthoxylum (Japanese Pepper), Echinacea, and Magnolia Bark Extract. This “Phytocann-Complex” nurtures and nourishes the ECS, and is a safe alternative for those who might be concerned about drug testing or CBD’s known and potential side effects.*
Emerald Health offers 5 different ECS-support supplements. They all include the PhytoCann Complex of herbals and botanicals listed above, with other added nutrients for superior results as follows:
- Endo Bliss, which uses 30mg of Saffron Extract to promote a natural elevation in mood and a positive outlook.
- Endo Inflame, using Theracurmin and Boswellia for a healthy response to pain and inflammation.
- Endo Calm, making use of Ashwagandha and PharmaGABA to help cope with daily stress, fear, depression and anxiety.
- Endo Sleep, with Passion Flower Extract, PharmaGABA, and 2.5mg of Melatonin.
- Endo Brain, utilizing the combination of Bacopa and Huperzine for memory and cognition support.
Harvest Market is excited to offer these “CBD Alternatives” for general wellness and condition specific issues. Please stop in, pick up some literature, and try what’s been called “Nature’s Solution” for a number of health concerns.
*From Dr. Michael Murray’s book, “The Healing Power of the Endocannabinoid System”:
“Internet marketers and others have jumped on the CBD bandwagon and are hyping it as a virtual cure-all. However, there are a couple important considerations for consumers, aside from legal matters: Does CBD oil produce benefits and if so, at what dosage? To answer the first part of the question, yes there is some evidence that products that contain only CBD can produce some benefits. But the results were not that impressive in double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials, even with high dosages of CBD (400-1,200 mg a day)… One of the reasons why animal and in vitro (test tube) studies show great effects with CBD, while human studies often show the opposite, may be due to the poor absorption of CBD when taken orally. Only about 6 percent of the oil is absorbed in humans.”
(Side note: A dosage of 1000mg to 2000mg of CBD oil can theoretically result in testing positive for THC).
