Natural vs. Organic
The labels Natural and Organic are not interchangeable. The terms "Natural" or "All Natural" are not regulated by the USDA and therefore are not required to conform to any production standards. On the other hand, any product labeled as "100% Organic", "Organic" or "Made with Organic Ingredients" must be certified by the USDA to meet these standards:

  • Avoidance of most synthetic chemical inputs (e.g. fertilizer, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, food additives, etc), genetically modified organisms, irradiation, and the use of sewage sludge.
  • Use of farmland that has been free from synthetic chemicals for three or more years.
  • Keeping detailed written production and sales records.
  • Maintaining strict physical separation of organic products from non-certified products.
  • Undergoing periodic on-site inspections.

These standards are comprehensive and cover every aspect of organic farming, processing, transportation, labeling and packaging.

The three levels of organic are explained here.

Many small farms are unable to fulfill the rigorous and costly organic certification process, but may be upholding these guidelines nonetheless. This is why it is very important to know where your food comes from. Establish a relationship with your farmers by visiting your local farmers market, signing up for a Community Supported Agriculture share or talking with our knowledgeable staff.
